Style Buzz: 5 Simple Style Hacks + Styling Yellow Sandals

Three Ideas to Inspire Your Style This Week

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"I ordered the yellow!"

How could you resist?!
How could you resist?!

One of my clients sent me pics of her outfits in June and I noticed she wasn't wearing shoes in any of them. When I asked why, she simply said, "I never put shoes on since I always just slip on the same pair of black shoes on the way out!" So when she sent me a link to a pair she was thinking of buying, I asked if instead of black, would she consider getting the marigold yellow ones? I pointed out how feet don't need to be boring and the yellow would go with all of her dresses and jumpsuits and most of her pants. They'd also add a lovely pop of interest, which would elevate her style. Result? She got them!

Color (and being brave) for the win!

SIMPLE STYLE HACKS

Apart from encouraging people to try a new color on their feet, I often share tips and tricks with my clients that immediately change how an outfit is styled and often removes a small irritant. Here are quick videos showing five of my favorites!

The French Tuck for the Short-Waisted: Also known as the Half Tuck. This is where the front middle of a shirt is tucked into the waistband then pulled out a little to create definition and visual interest around the waist. What it's actually doing is lengthening the leg and creating a casual, lovely curve that mimics an hourglass shape. However, if you're short waisted (and wearing high waisted jeans), you don't always end up with the right proportions.

J Crew Cuff: You know I'm a fan of rolling my sleeves up, but sometimes a sharply-turned cuff looks too prim and harsh for the outfit. When I need something a little more casual, I use the J Crew method. It's a perfectly imperfect way of getting your sleeves up but without constricting your arm. Plus they're really easy to undo!

Getting Ruched Sleeves to Stay Put: Speaking of rolling your sleeves up, I've been shoving my cardigan and blazer sleeves up my arms since high school. But keeping them there is not always easy! This is so quick and simple, and prevents you from fussing with your sleeves all day.

Belt Knot: If your leather belt is too long or you're adding a belt to a dress without belt loops, what do you do with the extra length beyond the buckle so it's not flopping around and irritating you? This is quite a cool effect and the belt becomes a feature and more than just a way to define your waist or keep your pants up.

Half Bow: This is handy if you've got a string tie at the neckline of a shirt or a thin fabric belt and want to tie more than a knot but less than a bow. TIP: start with uneven lengths so they come out the same length.

3 WAYS TO WEAR IT: Yellow Sandals

I'll admit, I encouraged my client to buy the yellow sandals because I have a pair and know first-hand how they go with everything and are appropriate in so many situations. The color is surprisingly versatile and while it's not in my color palette, I can wear it because it's not next to my face. Plus how could you look at your feet in them and not be happy?!

Elevated t-shirt and shorts! The t-shirt has a little gold in it that is highlighted by the yellow.

Just plain jeans with a cream blouse and cardigan let the shoes be a pop without too much contrast.

The neutral leopard print and black are really complemented by the unexpected yellow.
