Three Ideas to Inspire Your Style This Week

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"I hate shopping when I feel sloppy. It doesn’t inspire me to level up."

It's so true! How you dress affects how you feel, especially if you're trying to move toward a future self. Check out my latest blog post about how what you wear when you're shopping can help you do just that.

BEHIND THE SCENES: PERSONAL SHOPPING

ree

I often hear people say one or both of these phrases:

  • I absolutely hate shopping.

  • I have no idea where to find clothes that look good on me.

It truly breaks my heart! Not that I believe that everyone should think that shopping is The Best Thing Ever! but it certainly shouldn't be something they dread or feel frustrated by.

Because I'm aware of how difficult it can be, I try to make it as effortless as possible for my clients. This is what's involved in a personal shopping appointment with a stylist:

  • Before the appointment, the client completes a Style Assessment so I've got their measurements, history, and style goals while shopping.

  • I pick 3-5 local boutiques that I feel are appropriate for my client's preferences, goals, and budget. The day before the shopping appointment, I work with each store to pull a selection of clothes and have them put on hold. I keep each selection in mind so that pieces work together as a cohesive collection no matter which shop they come from.

  • On the day of the appointment, I get to the first shop early to set up a dressing room with the rack of clothes, then I meet the client and we have a quick chat about what the plan is, reminding them of the details I've already shared by email.

  • We then head to the dressing room and see the first selection of clothes! I'll immediately remove anything they are turned off by (I don't force anyone to try on something they hate!), and they just start trying on pieces.

  • If they need something in a different size, color, or style, I'll run and grab it.

  • As they come out to show me each piece, we talk about its fit, versatility, and how it aligns with their goals.

  • Once they make their decisions about which pieces to get, they head to the registers (or if they're unsure about something, they put it on hold) while I run ahead to the next shop and get that dressing room set up for them. We repeat as needed!

  • At the end of the appointment, we'll have a little chat about how it went, what they learned, and I show them what their digital wardrobe app will look like, which they'll get a few days after the appointment.

It's an unhurried, calm experience where they've got professional, unbiased advice helping them make decisions about each piece and as a whole collection. It truly makes my heart sing when they say I've helped them find exactly what they were looking for, even if they didn't know what that was ahead of time, and how much more confident they'll be when they need to buy something in the future. My favorite thing to hear, though, is, "I can't believe it but I had FUN! And I've never said that about shopping before!"

3 WAYS TO WEAR IT: Pink Velvet Blazer

I admit, this was an impulse buy from thredUP, so while I didn't spend much on it, I didn't want it to languish in my closet, unworn and underappreciated.

Paired with a wide-leg jean, simple cream blouse and mules, the outfit is casual but polished.

Not quite monochrome but the pink blouse, brown jeans and brown boots create a cohesive look.

The pink really pops against a black blouse and chiffon skirt with black heels peeking out.
