Style Buzz: Tips for Closet Organization + 3 Ways to Style a Chambray Shirt

Three Ideas to Inspire Your Style This Week

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"My closet is so beautiful now that I just want to hang out in there! I have NEVER said that before!"

ree

This client's closet was overflowing, confusing, and chaotic, and because of that, it was a place she spent as little time in as possible. She hated how it looked, how it made her feel guilty and overwhelmed, how it made her lose her sense of style, and how it started her days off on such an ugly note. After just four hours, her world is so different now! Her closet is happy, her clothes are happy, and she's happy. And that makes ME happy on so many levels!

CLOSET ORGANIZATION 101

A cluttered closet isn't just a place where you're tripping over things or struggling to squeeze new purchases into it. A cluttered closet hides the pieces you love! When it's full of things that don't fit or flatter you, that represent a former version of yourself that you don't want to be again, that need repair, or even that are completely worn out, you will struggle with knowing exactly what's in your working wardrobe, which makes getting dressed exhausting.

Three quick tips for basic closet organization:

  1. Remove all the pieces that shouldn't be in there. This includes pieces you hate or make a face about, if it's beyond mending or completely worn out, if it's just not you, or it no longer fits and if it ever did fit again, you'd likely treat yourself to a new, up-to-date version.

  2. Put all like pieces together - short sleeve blouses, long sleeve shirts, blazers, sweaters, dresses, trousers, cardigans, etc - or, put all things of the same color together. Then sort by fabric weight, like going from silk to cotton to denim. Use matching hangers so your eye is drawn to the clothes, not the chaos of the hanger colors. You can find a box of velvet ones at Costco $10 for 50.

  3. Keep the key pieces that really define your preferred style and make you feel amazing in the most prominent part of your closet. If you feel frumpy because you always seem to wear tshirts and fleece sweatshirts, move those to the periphery and keep the gorgeous blouses and blazers in front where you'll see them immediately.

Try these ideas this weekend and let me know how it goes!

LANE COUNTY HOME & GARDEN SHOW

THIS WEEKEND!

Something else to try this weekend: Head down to the fairgrounds for the Lane County Home & Garden Show where all the helpful people will be gathered in one place to turn your house into the home of your dreams! And who doesn't want a dream closet, the kind you walk into gracefully and elegantly. It’s luxurious, organized, and brightly lit, with room to move. There are 12 curated items on a rail, shoes evenly spaced and easy to see, with an occasional handbag on display. It’s beautiful, calm, inviting, and feels like a boutique.

Maybe it has a pair of blue satin Manolo’s in it.

While not every closet can be something out of the movies, it can still be a place of delight, one that you look forward to being in! Talk to the builders about making your dream a reality.

BEHIND THE SCENES: MY CLOSET!

I live in a 1940's bungalow so space is tight with two of us working from home, which makes me so fortunate to have a walk-in dressing room all to myself (thanks, Bob!). It's lovely and bright and open and it's easy to see my clothes and accessories. I learned a log time ago that I need to actually SEE my things in order to remember that I have them, so I designed it to do just that. I have built-in shelves and drawers to store foldables and shoes, plus a rail on the half-wall to hang shirts, blazers, skirts, dresses, and trousers on. There's room to move about, a chair for putting on shoes, and display space for my jewelry and perfumes (plus a couple of hats). What this means is that I keep most of my clothes out all year round, which encourages me to wear them all year round, thus getting much more value out of them.

Plus it just looks so pretty!

The clothes rail, home to 96 (!!) pieces, and a tidy spot for my laundry basket

The wire sliding baskets make it easy to see tshirts, cardigans and sweaters

A wall of shoes! Plus a hat box from the Lock & Co hat shop in London.

3 WAYS TO WEAR IT: Chambray Shirt

I don't often say there are pieces that everyone should have in their wardrobe, but a chambray (or denim) shirt is one that I might make an exception for. They're so versatile in both style and color. The neutral color goes with almost everything and they are easily dressed up or down. I also love the weight - light enough for summer but also good as a layering piece in the cooler weather. Click here for even more ideas for Spring Denim!

The monochrome palette (aka Texas Tuxedo/Double Denim) makes the plaid blazer the focal point of casual polish.

Paired with a creamy lace blouse, black jeans and high boots, the blue adds a pop of unexpected color and creativity.

Tied at the waist, the shirt is a perfect over-layer with a summer dress for both sun protection and evening chills.
