Style Buzz: Undergarments + How To Measure Yourself + Styling a Burgundy Top

Three Ideas to Inspire Your Style This Week

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"What a difference the right bra has made! My clothes hang better and fit like they're supposed to. I didn't realize it would have that much of an effect."

Useful AND pretty!
Useful AND pretty!

No matter your size, the right bra is crucial to your style! Clothes are designed and cut assuming our body parts are in a particular place. Unless you're getting your clothes custom made, you're going to need a little bit of assistance to put things where they need to be, whether it's via a bra or support garments. Keep reading for more about how to find the underthings that work for you and your style!

FABULOUS FOUNDATIONS

They're the hardest working pieces in your wardrobe! Bras are designed to lift, separate, and corral* the girls, and support garments smooth things out to improve fit and remove any distractions from your clothes.

Getting ones that do their job really well are worth the time and money. Make sure they're working for you, not against you. Here are some tips:

  • Take your time when shopping for foundations and never settle because you're

overwhelmed. Stop and take a breather (or get a bevvie!) if needed.

  • Have a professional bra fitting. Yes, it's intimate and yes, it makes all the difference.

  • Look for quality - price does matter.

  • Take your outfit with you if you're looking for a specific piece to go under it.

  • Shop with a friend to make it a fun outing!

  • Be brave and try a different style or design. You might surprise yourself.

*Some bras are nicknamed Rodeo Bras because they round 'em up and head 'em out!

Three local shops for you to explore:

Freudian Slip provides under garments from basic to jaw-dropping that will help you look and feel your best. They carry beautiful styles of lingerie, foundations, loungewear, and more, in a wide range of sizes.

Ruth's is your go-to for a comprehensive selection of garments and they do personal fittings. They also offer alterations to any bra bought in store or not, and  carry a wide selection of women's sleepwear and swimwear.

While Valley River Center isn't a local boutique, you can find quality lingerie in a range of sizes at Macy's JC Penny & Lane Bryant. They're worth exploring if you're not finding what you need elsewhere and before you look online.

Once you start looking at all the styles out there, you'll realize that sports bras are not the only comfortable option!

One final resource: Remember The Moon boutique specializes in mastectomy products. The owner, Andrea, is a certified mastectomy fitter so you know you and your girls are in experienced, kind hands.

One final note: It's so frustrating to see women wearing foundations with very little thought to how they work with their clothes. They'll wear garments that are too dark or light, the wrong size, or have seams that show through fabrics. There's a reason there are so many different styles out there - different clothes require different cuts, shapes, and straps. Sports bras are named as such because they are for exercise and activity, not for under your silk blouse. Plus you should NOT be wearing the same bra every day! The material needs a break from contact with your skin, so even if you only like one style, buy several to rotate through.

(end rant!)

HOW TO MEASURE YOURSELF

ree

If you've never had a bra fitting or are going in for an update (because bodies change whether you signed up for that or not), everything will be based off your measurements. If you don't know them, don't worry, the pro will take them for you. However, it's good information to have in general, so here's a little guide on where to measure yourself.

This is so useful when trying to figure out what size you might be in a particular brand, but also if you see something in a store and want to know if it will fit. Simply lay the garment flat and measure it! If the garment is 20" across the hips and your hips measure less than 40", you know it should fit you without needing to try it on.

3 WAYS TO WEAR IT: Burgundy Top

This is a fabulous sleeveless blouse - the surplice construction (where it looks like a wrap across the body but is just the fabric folded over) is very flattering, there's a high-low hemline that mimics a French tuck, and the color is just gorgeous. It's got a bit of a sheen to it, which dresses up or down nicely for almost limitless ways to wear it.

You can never go wrong pairing a pretty, posh blouse with jeans, but adding the patent bronze shoe plays nicely off the sheen in the blouse and adds a bit of polish.

The top pairs easily with a cream pleated skirt and cardigan, but adding the pearl-encrusted tennies gives a sense of playfulness and casualness to what could be a little prim.

The brown jeans and and boots plus the burgundy top make for an almost monochromatic palette, while the light pink patterned blazer brightens things up.
