A friend recently visited from England and while he lives in a very metropolitan area and can wear bold, cool fashion, he admitted to shopping at his local thrift store out of necessity. It's not that there aren't good options near him; he's just not inclined to head out on his own and trust that the staff are looking out for his best interest, not their own commission. When he's asked girlfriends for their opinion, they pushed their own preferences rather than what suits him.
So while he was in town, he hired me to help him find some quality, versatile pieces with a nod to his personality that would work for everyday, dates, travel, and special occasions.
First things first: a pair of black Levi's. He was surprised that I put him in black instead of his usual blue denim. They're a lot more polished than even dark blue and they do the heavy lifting of elevating even a basic shirt with minimal effort. (Yes, including an England rugby shirt!👇)
We then headed over to Mr Meers in Oakway where he walked into a fully stocked dressing room with loads of different options:
The store has an amazing inventory of elevated casual pieces, and Scott really knew how each brand would fit - if it ran large, boxy, slim, etc. - and was quick to help find the right size when needed. We were spoiled for choice on pieces that hit the mark of what he was looking for!
They're great go-to shirts and there's nothing boring about them!
The third stop was at Porterhouse on Broadway, known for its classic, durable menswear. I was mindful of energy and budget, so didn't pull as many pieces for him to try on.
These also looked fab! The materials and prints were comfortable and interesting, and the cuts were flattering on length and across his shoulders and chest.
Just for fun (because I knew it wouldn't fit in his luggage), I had him try on a denim pullover. This piece is amazing - it takes the place of a sweatshirt but with so much more style, plus you can easily fit a shirt underneath and pop a coat over it for added layering.
This was the first time he'd ever worked with a stylist and his response to the experience was so positive!
I really didn't know what to expect - I thought I'd end up wearing overly-fancy clothes that I wouldn't feel like myself in, but I was willing to trust you and try what you suggested. I was surprised that I liked how things looked! I know the quality of the pieces I bought means they'll last a long time and will make me look and feel like a million bucks. I appreciate that you took my comfort and budget - and luggage space! - into consideration. I'm actually looking forward to doing this again when I come back. Til next time, sweetie!
So overall, it was a success and he's headed back to England with a new wardrobe and a new attitude toward style and shopping. I'm curious how many of those thrift store shirts will be headed back to where they came from!
