Tailoring isn't just about getting a custom suit made or altering your wedding dress. It's also about fitting off-the-rack clothes to your specific shape. Tailoring takes a good piece and makes it fabulous, and can save a piece that needs repair. To get the most from tailoring:

• It's a relationship! Start off with smaller, minor alterations to see how they work before you give them a complex piece.

• Ask for a cost estimate before you go in for your fitting.

• Wear the proper undergarments or shoes at your fitting, and take any accessories that need to be considered.

• Be patient and plan ahead. They need time to do the job properly, plus seasonal demand around weddings, prom, and the holidays slow their turnaround times.

• Find a specialist if your alterations are complex, like beading or silk.

• Try your items on when you pick them up to make sure they don't need any further alterations.

• Learn how to do basic repairs (buttons and small tears especially!) that don't need a tailor.
