Style Buzz: Inside the Digital Wardrobe App + Styling a Striped Cardigan

Three Ideas to Inspire Your Style This Week

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"Mondays are my "stretch" day to wear something I like but it's out of my comfort zone. "

A lovely friend said this recently and I thought it was clever of her to assign a day to it. It puts it on her schedule as a non-negotiable, meaning that every week, she's trying something new and stretching herself and her style. Not that it has to be every Monday for you, but even picking a day a month, like the 1st or the 15th, is enough to get into the habit of trying new things - with the clothes you already have.

STAYING COMFORTABLE WHEN STRETCHING YOUR COMFORT ZONE

One of my favorite comments from clients comes both during wardrobe remixes, where we're making new outfits from what they already have, or during a person shopping appointment, finding new pieces that elevate their style.

"I never thought I could wear something like this!"

I'm not exactly putting them in high fashion outfits worthy of Vogue or the Met Gala. Often I'm just putting pieces together in a different way, turning a cuff, adding a French tuck, pairing contrasting colors or patterns, that sort of thing. But so often it's out of their comfort zone, especially if they've been in a rut of athleisure wear. I'm delighted when they approach their appointment with an open mind and let me suggest things they wouldn't normally try (which is why they've hired me in the first place, right?), as it helps them stretch that comfort zone in new directions - but with in-the-moment guidance and support. It also lets them see themselves differently, and that's the real moment of transformation.

During their appointment, they learn practical knowledge about how to put outfits together but there's a lot to remember! To help with that, I give them access to a digital wardrobe app they can keep on their phone to guide them long after I've left. I've mentioned the app in previous newsletters, but unless I've shown it to you in person, you might not grasp the full depth of its brilliance to help you see your style more clearly and shop more intentionally. It has three main sections that work beautifully together: Closet, Lookbooks, and Finds.

CLOSET

This is your own clothes in a digital wardrobe. We upload photos of clothes, shoes and accessories you already own so you can see everything in one tidy place, organized into categories. You can also upload your own photos directly when you buy something new. It’s a brilliant way to spot what’s working, what’s missing and what you might have forgotten you loved. It's also particularly useful when you're out shopping to remind you what you already have and don't buy unnecessary duplicates, plus you can see what other items a potential piece will go with before you buy it. Here's one client's wardrobe:

LOOKBOOKS

Here’s where the real magic of style happens! I create curated outfit ideas using your own pieces (and sometimes a few new ones). It’s a visual guide to help you mix, match and make the most of what you already have — perfect for everyday dressing, events or travel. These looks can serve as a playbook for your daily outfits, as inspiration for how to put pieces together, or a way to simplify your mornings and remove the decision of what to wear. Just scroll through the looks and pick the one that suits your mood!

Another clever little feature is that you can mark items as a priority for styling, meaning that if you've got a piece in your wardrobe you don't know what to do with, you can simply mark it "Priority" and I'll put together a handful of looks with it for you to try. It keeps your wardrobe from becoming stagnant, teaching you how to look at your pieces more creatively. Here's how I put all of her clothes together into outfits. You can really see the versatility of each piece!

FINDS

These are either pieces you're considering that we found while shopping, or my hand-picked shopping suggestions, chosen to fill genuine wardrobe gaps and complement your existing style. Every Find is purposeful — no impulse buys, just smart additions. Plus, you can click to go straight to the website and purchase it.

Altogether, the app is a living, useful tool to keep your wardrobe stylish, organized and true to you. And occasionally, there are surprise benefits that even I hadn't considered! I checked in with one of my clients about how the app was working for her and she said,

"I learned a long time ago if I buy something new, especially if it is even a little bit outside of my comfort zone, the longer I wait to wear it, the less likely I am to EVER wear it. The app reminds me to wear everything at least once as soon as possible to make friends with it and be comfortable!"

3 WAYS TO WEAR IT: Striped Cardigan

A chunky cardigan is perfect for bundling up, so why not get one that has a pop of personality, too? This one is from Gilt + Gossamer at 5th Street Market last year and I love the colors and bold stripes. It's well made and I'm sure it will keep me company for many more winters!

With the hem of the shirt peeking out at the bottom, the stripes of the cardigan break up the Texas Tuxedo.

You can pair the same pattern - stripes with stripes - as long as the colors are complementary.

The neutral blouse with brown jeans and boots let the pattern in the cardigan take center stage.
