Guide to Local Highlights

If we've met, you know that one of the things integral to my services is sharing info with the people who are looking for it (or didn't know they were!). I've always been in positions that facilitated the exchange of knowledge: as a meeting planner, I organized small and large educational conferences and events, and as a marketer, I learned the best ways to disseminate info quickly to pique someone's interest, allowing them to learn more about something that interested them.
I remember having an a ha! moment a few years ago when a client asked where they could find clothes that suited their textile and texture preferences. They wanted soft, organic clothing that wouldn't irritate their skin issues, but still looked pretty and not like pajamas (you know how I love those...). I guided them to a few shops around town, and from there, started gathering more info about local boutiques into a downloadable PDF. That little list grew to include not just clothing shops but also undergarments, shoe repair, tailors, online shopping, and recycling + donation locations. A comprehensive style guide to our community that not only gives people the info they need at a glance but a way to keep those small businesses open.
Think about the consequences of only shopping online - small boutiques will be forced to close (it's happened to several shops that were on my original lists), and if we stop using tailors and shoe repair, they'll go out of business, and we'll have no way to repair small, mendable flaws in our garments, which means they'll just get thrown away and add to the already huge amount of items going into landfill. That goes against so many principles of the PNW.
I'm thrilled to see how many new vintage and resale shops have popped up over the past two years, which means our community is committed to circular fashion, moving pieces along that they're done with and giving them new life with someone who's thrilled to having them in their wardrobe.
I'm also pleased to see how people light up when I tell them about these local resources - often they've no idea just how many boutiques there are in town! And it's such a different type of shopping that you find in other parts of the state because it whether you buy new, resale, or vintage, you're taking part in the sustainability mindset of the area. So when I was offered a chance to add to a Redfin blog about unique things to do in Eugene, I just had to point this out.
Check out the article below for a sweet reminder of this and some other quirky and lovely highlights of our community.
